Durban - Five people were arrested on Thursday after they severely assaulted and kidnapped two people in Springfield.
The two people, aged 28 and 36, were forced into the boot of a vehicle at gunpoint.
When they arrived at a truck yard, the suspects demanded R50 000 from them.
One of the victims was released to go raise the money, but instead contacted police who immediately responded.
Police spokesperson, Nqobile Gwala, said the victim pointed out the suspects who prevented the five people to flee.
"Investigations revealed that the suspects are three policemen and a policewoman stationed at Inanda SAPS. The fifth suspect appeared to be a security guard," said Gwala.
The suspects will appear in the Durban Magistrate Court, where they face charges of kidnapping, extortion, pointing of a firearm, theft of a cellphone and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
